The Bachelor of Science in Biology (BSBio) program of the Department of Biological Sciences was initially offered in 1980. With more than 40 years of existence, the program has produced a significant number of graduates who are now working in government and private companies, research institutions, private and state colleges, universities, high schools, food and feed industries, agricultural sectors, microbiological companies, hospitals, oil industries, NGOs, laboratory equipment and supplies companies, agro-chemical companies, pharmaceutical companies, brewery and distillery companies, health and sanitary industries, and better prepared them for medical school. Several revisions of the curriculum have been undertaken to keep abreast with the rapid development in the field of Biology and changes in government policies. For instance, in 2006 the BS Biology program was revised in response to CHED CMO 24 series of 2005. Furthermore, based on the Guidelines for the implementation of CMO NO. 46, series of 2012, the BS Biology program implemented a shift to learning competency-based standards/ outcomes-based education. Recently, Republic Act No. 10533 also known as the K to 12 program of the Department of Education was enacted into law to enhance the Philippine basic education system by strengthening its curriculum and increasing the number of years for basic education.
The BS Biology program is a generalized framework of study with the end view of groundingstudents with the fundamental concepts, principles, and theories of the biological, natural and physicalsciences and the conduct of research. This includes the acquisition of appropriate skills, and trainingin the efficient processing and presentation of information in both written and oral form in a globalsetting.
The BS Biology program is structured to meet the needs of professional biologists who can be employed in government/private institutions and other agencies where scientists with biological expertise are needed, can engage in entrepreneurial activities, conduct research in the various areas of biology, undertake post graduate education in Biology and allied fields, and pursue a career in teaching.
